A Rough Tale Part II

She stood at the edge of the great hole, looking down. Two armies rested, one on each side of her, trapping her between their amorphous forms. But she belonged to neither side of this war. She cared only for the forsaken hole they fought over.
The surface of the hole, though it had seemed empty and dark but a moment before, now shimmered and glistened as if it held water within its depths, as if there had been movement beneath its smooth, glassy veneer. She leaned forward slightly, but could perceive nothing within the unfathomable depths of the hole.
She took a cursory glance at her surroundings, the guards she had bribed standing incuriously behind her, before leaning forward until her whole front was touching the wet, viscous surface of the hole. The skin of its surface held for a few sickening seconds before releasing her, suddenly, into the dark liquid within the hole. She dropped quickly, much more quickly than she had expected, through the abyss within the hole, until at last the line she had tied for herself above grew taut, jerking her to an abrupt halt.
At the sudden stop, she began working to get her bearings. She spun slowly at the end of her line, the momentum of her fall now redirected to propel her gently side to side. She had known, intellectually at least, that the hole would be larger inside than out. They had said, after all, that it held its own separate world. Only now did she realize how foreign the world within the hole truly was.
Around her, she could see only the line that tied her back to her safe world. Even that was only visible for a few feet, disappearing into the darkness surrounding her in a wave-like haze. Though she could not see, she had a definite sense of the enormity of the space around her. The sounds she had made dropping down had been muted by the syrupy atmosphere of the hole, but she thought she could hear the faint echoes of her descent even now.
She would have to move quickly. They said powerful creatures lurked within this darkness, and even had that not been so, she had wasted enough time getting to the hole in the first place. She had no time to go sight-seeing now that she was finally here.
Closing her eyes and taking a few shaky breaths, she focused her attention inside of herself. She could feel her tensed muscles and worked to relax them one by one. The pressing darkness was having more of an effect on her than she would have liked admit, but she knew she would only progress slower by worrying. She painstakingly took control of her troubled emotions, shutting them away until she felt only apathy. Then she found within herself the emotional tie that attached her to him.
She held that before her in her mind’s eye until its glow was so bright it nearly burned to imagine it. Opening her eyes once again, she could see, faintly visible in the muddied light, a shining golden line leading from her chest and disappearing into the darkness just in front of her.
She moved her arms and legs in a swimming motion, trying to move towards the end of the golden string. As she thrust herself forward, the atmosphere that she had previously fallen through so easily thickened to a soupy consistency. Her body began to move, slowly at first and then more quickly as she steadied into a more rhythmic motion.
Though she could feel the passing of the atmosphere around her body and knew herself to be in motion, the darkness all around her did not change. She felt an eerie sense of going nowhere, despite all her effort. Eventually, however, she spied a single point of light in the darkness, growing larger and brighter as she moved towards it.
The golden string led her on and on, past the first light and on to another, and another.  She passed into a field of the comforting lights, some as small as her head and some larger than her whole body. Shadow still pressed in against these distant, pale lights, but the simple presence of brightness in this dark, empty world alleviated some of her worry.
At last, just as she began to grow weary from her travels, she could dimly discern the tail of the golden string. It hovered just underneath and beyond one of the largest of the floating lights. With a grateful push, she traveled incautiously forward to her end goal.
Just as she swam close to the great light, she spied a movement underneath it. At first her heart leapt. She had seen him! He was alive! But within seconds, she realized that the bulk beneath the light had been far too large to be a human man.
With a sudden, numb shock, she registered what her eyes, so focused on the soothing lights, had failed to see just beyond them in the darkness. Surrounding her were dozens of gigantic, eyeless, evil-looking fish. They barely moved. She could not even distinguish the motion of their breathing, if they breathed at all. And attached to their backs by a long thin line, were her one comfort in this world, the floating lights.
Looking more closely into the oppressive darkness, she could see dozens of small creatures: fish, snakes, beasts unrecognizable in the dark. They flocked to her as she tread water, holding her up in the weak atmosphere even as they bit into her and fed from her flesh and bones.
And in front of her, just beyond the reach of the light, she noticed at last the huge eyeless face, the great lips and the sharp teeth jutting menacingly from them. It was into the dark crevasse between these lips that her golden string led her.
With an immediate sense of alarm, she pedaled awkwardly backwards. The abrupt motion dislodged many of the smaller, weaker beasts from her arms and legs. New creatures flew quickly to her struggling form, engulfing her in their hunger, even as she dislodged others. She could feel herself drowning, being eaten alive by these beasts in this dark world.
No matter how she struggled she could not free herself from their tiny grasps. She tugged on the rope connecting her to her home world, but she knew that the energy these tiny beasts had stolen would prevent her from making the return trip.

A RoughTale

Occassionally I will write fantasy and sci-fi just for fun. I, personally, find it cathartic and generally don't expect anyone actually to read my crap. However, I volunteered to help a friend of mine think of fun story ideas to draw/sketch, so I'm going to post a couple of the tales that I have already written and maybe write a couple new ones in order to help her.

All of this is going to be first draft stuff. I don't usually go over my writing or edit it later because I only do it for a couple of hours entertainment.

Naturally, all of these stories are copyrighted by me, Sarah Gates. If you want to use them (I don't know why you would), please contact me for permission first.

Haha! Posts!

This is a playblast of a rough walk cycle I did for the game I'm helping to make in Seth's video game class.

It's super bad quality and the viking (for that is what the character is) is way up at the top of the frame, but I'm not in the lab right now, and thus can't fix it at the moment. I'll try to upload a better playblast in the near future.

Yeah....

So it seems  that it will take me longer than expected to get back into the habit of posting every day. I continue to try.

Few Posts

I am, in general, an indifferent poster, as you might be able to tell from this blog. However, now that finals are over, I will try to continue posting once a day again. Today's topic is: Castle Crashers. While I'm normally not a huge fan of party games/casual games, I do occasionally play one or two. One of my friends recently bought Castle Crashers during a Microsoft sale, and while co-oping with him and his roommate, I discovered that it was pretty much the best party/multiplayer game I've ever played. As soon as I have xbox live again (I don't pay for it during the school year, for previously discussed reasons), I'm definitely going to have to buy it and have an animation pie and game night. Oh, the joys of pie and games. Does it get any better?

I think not.

And then there were many post-less days. And there was much crying and gnashing of teeth.

I sometimes like to make up bible-ish quotes in an attempt to deflect attention from the fact that I have failed.

My excuse is: it's finals time, which is messing up the schedule on this blog a bit. I will try to be more diligent in the future.

Okay, so blogger is not letting me post my reel in it's current incarnation. I probably need to make a smaller file, which I'm not going to do right at this moment. What I will post, however, are a few of the images in my current reel.

This was the hairstyle target I was going for in my grooms below, found (obviously) at hairstyledesign.com.

I still need to paint the previous character's scalp so that her bald spots aren't quite so obvious. I would also like to work on her sideburns and stray hairs a little more too. Actually, there's still a lot of work I'd like to put into this groom, but I'm going to have to put it off at least until finals are over.

I wish I could show you a full turn-around, but I've been having difficulty getting my batch renders to work in the lab, and I'm not going to spend another 2-5 hours figuring out why the crap this won't batch render just for this blog. I suspect it has something to do with shave and a haircut acting weird with the way we have the lab computers set up.

Also, I would like to note that the head model on which I groomed the hair is not mine. I just downloaded it for free off the internets.

Concept.

Diffuse.

Bump.

Final Image.

So tired....

So it is sleepy time now, but before I go, here is my offering to you:

I'll try to actually put the video on here, along with my old sophomore reel, tomorrow or friday.

Nighty night.

I Love New Wacom Tablets

We have new Wacom tablets in the lab! W00t! In tribute, I am going to share one of my many doodles from the new Wacom tablets. I should really learn to focus better. On the other hand, 40 completely sleepless hours can excuse pretty much anything, I think.

Holy Crap Microsoft!

So, Microsoft has been here for most of the day and I haven't gotten a chance to scan in any figure drawings or render out any other awesome things, but I will probably be doing that tonight. Keep an eye out for upcoming late-night posts!

More Old Figure Drawings

These are actually a few of the figure drawings that helped me get into the animation program at BYU. I haven't done any longer poses (as opposed to just gestures that were 20 minutes or less) in a year or so, but I worked for at least 2 hours on almost every figure drawing (minus the gesture here and maybe one other) I turned in when I was applying. Seriously, though. Gesture drawing is ridiculously fun and really helps improve any drawing skills you might be cultivating. Everyone should do it, even if they aren't an artist.

One More Post, And Then I'll Stop Talking

So, I really feel like I should mention my current love of Dragon Age 2 at this point.

I make an effort, every semester, to cut myself off from video games entirely. I spend too much time on them when I really should be working and/or doing something useful; and that's just not a good idea during the schoolyear, when my grades and my scholarships depend on me focusing.

I'm one of those people who can't play a game (or do anything, really) for just an hour. Once I get started, I don't come up for air again for hours. Every once in awhile, I awake from my game-induced hypnosis to realize I have have not slept or eaten in the last 24 hours, that the overwhelming desire to finish the ever present next quest was the sole reason for my feeling of boundless energy. Cut off from that source of power, the exhaustion from the past few days rises up and threatens to destroy me with its entirely justified wrath.

I figure that's probably not healthy.

The danger with Dragon Age in general and Dragon Age 2 specifically is that it's epic-ness calls to me constantly, even when I'm not playing it, even before I've bought it. It cajoles me and sings its siren songs until at last I finally give in.

So I bought DA2 two Saturdays ago and I've beaten the game twice and am even now midway through my third playthrough. Sometimes I don't sleep so that I have time to play Dragon Age at night and actually do schoolwork during the daytime.

When I said I was addicted, I really meant it.

Old Gesture Drawings

(I doodle a lot when the models take breaks)

Since I'll (hopefully) be posting some of my most recent figure drawings from this semester in the very near future, I thought I would post a few of my favorites from midway through last semester for comparison.

Sorry I can't post the more recent ones, but my lack of scanner does tend to make that difficult. I'm going to have to wait until the print lab on campus opens up on Monday before I can post anything that I didn't create digitally or that I don't already have scanned in. So be prepared for lots of older stuff this weekend!

Double Post Day! W00T!

Since I spent about 14 hours in the CS lab yesterday, I never got to post my beautiful April Fool's day awesomeness. Here it be:

Those are post-it notes covering the truck, if you can't tell from the images. I didn't actually do this, but it made me laugh when I saw it, so I took a few pictures.

Hmmm

So, I was planning to scan in a few figure drawings that I did in Cynthia's Figure Drawing class tonight, but since the scanner in the 2D lab is not being nice to me, I'm afraid I'll have to come up with something else instead.

I suppose I will share with you one of my (many) lyrical enjoyments in life: Jonathan Coulton. His songs amuse me to no end. And, for those who have never heard Skullcrusher Mountain, let me tell you that a horribly mutated half-pony half-monkey monster is a great gift for any captive brides you might have waiting under duress in your your dastardly lair.

No? Anyone? Oh well.

Introductions

Since anyone who checks on/follows this blog will (hopefully) be getting to know me well in the many post-ful days to come, I have decided to introduce myself in a vaguely misguided attempt at friendliness.

My name is Sarah Gates. I am an Animation major at BYU, though I also spent some time at Auburn University when I thought I wanted to major in Molecular Biology. I still really enjoy reading about genetics and especially about advances related to genetics made in the field of forensic science.

I love video games (mostly RPGs and action-adventure games), though I don't have as much time to play them as I wish I did. I am currently addicted to Dragon Age 2, despite all of the (largely foolish) bad reviews it's gotten. I also enjoy a good table-top RPG or strategy game if I have a fun group of people to play with. I love to read, especially fantasy and sci-fi, though I also occasionally like to change up my genre preferences. I finish at least one book a week. I mostly read when I should be paying attention in classes or while walking. I wouldn't advise following my example in this particular case; it's a lot more difficult than Bell (from Disney's Beauty and the Beast) makes it look. It's pretty much a given, as an animation major, that I love movies in general and animated movies in particular. I really love How To Train Your Dragon and Princess Mononoke. I love learning about the mythology of other cultures, which I think is part of the reason that these two movies affect me so strongly. I also like to write, but I don't do it very often. I rarely finish the pieces that I start when I'm writing just for fun.

I have a fairly large vocabulary that I unfortunately have trouble accessing when I speak. When I'm really tired (which is fairly often during the school year), my speech is even less eloquent; I forget how to form sentences properly and usually end up throwing all of the words out of my mouth in a more or less incomprehensible mass.

My brain is named Butter.

I believe that most people's initial impression of me is that I seem innocent and/or naive. Attending BYU has not improved this situation.

Despite the fact that I am currently attending Brigham Young University, I am not, in fact, Mormon.

I appreciate pretty socks and delicious teas, the latter of which I am forbidden from indulging in as long as I attend BYU.

People who have no interest in bettering themselves intellectually confound me.

I really hate funerals.

Helloooooo

So, here we are again. A brand new blog always feels so nice, just like a new sketchbook. Unfortunately, eventually I have to put something in the blog, cluttering it with my various drawings, writings and other miscellaneous thoughts.

Anyway, I've decided to create a blog in which I make at least one post a day talking about or showing one awesome thing from my life. It will be by me, for me; but if anyone else wants to take a look, you are welcome here.
